revent gas tank

I have a 1988 alumiweld flat bottom boat that has a problem with the gas vent from the main tank. The vent hose runs along the side of the boat and then out the back of the boat. The problem is that it seem that it gets gas into the vent line and then blows it out the back of the boat. I have seen those gas caps with the vent hose hook to them but how would this work without problems feeding gas to the main motor. Or would it be better to run a new vent out the front of the boat. What do you guy think. I know that I am tried of smelling gas and don't what to put gas into the water any more.

I have seen check valves that are designed to stop this problem. Boaters World or West Marine should have them.

The vent line should have a loop in it at the back before hitting the vent. Does it have a loop? You could try a bigger loop of hose, or the check valve indicated above.
