Has anyone tried fishing in the Ocean Coho season? I am planning a trip to Winchester Bay next weekend, and haven't heard anything about how the fishing is. I don't even know if sport boats have been getting across the bar.

Over the 4th weekend I was at Garibaldi and talked to the marina owners. They had seen a few fish each day but not a lot of fish. I believe I heard a number of about 8 to 12 fish per day. The bar was closed a couple hours at the morning tide due to the big minus tide last weekend. Know nothing about as far south as you are headed. I believe it is better farther south early. good luck.

My girlfriend and I went on a charter out of Newport yesterday for silvers. We did very well. For a boat of six passengers, we landed nine hatchery fish, three natives, and lost two other fish. Not a bad six hours. Twice we ran a fire-drill with multiple hook-ups. It was a blast. We were running divers from 10-20 feet in depth. The bait was herring chunks on hoochies behind a flasher. Trolling speed of 2-3 knots. Some of the fish seemed to hit right as the trolling speed was adjusted.

Hope the info helps.

Here is a link to a Register Guard article about the results on opening weekend. To summarize the artcile 1284 fishermen went out of the southern ports (Winchester Bay south) and landed one coho. I don't know if it's picked up since then on the south coast, but you might want to call some of the charter operators and ask them how they are doing.

We have been fishing out of Newport with limited sucess. Sunday was the hottest day yet, we went to the rock pile and within 15 minutes had our 4 fish and headed back.
There was a lot of bait fish and they were super shallow, infact I could see my baits (flashers, herring, pink hoochies)
I can,t go till Wednesday, but the forcast looks like a morning show with a bumpy northwester on the way home.

Daily updates on the coastal coho catches are available at ODF&W's Marine Resources webpage. They are available by port and day and give all the stats on angler success. The adress is as follows: http://www.hmsc.orst.edu/odfw
From the main page, go to Ocean Salmon Management link and then to catches. Hopes this is of some use

Just got back from Depoe bay.....10 people on this boat.....8 silvers and 1 (3 in our group and we got 5!)chinook....the boat did hook 18 fish...which 3 being native coho...the rest were either lost at the boat or just searious take downs. We were the top boat of the day....acouple of boats had only one or two. They say the beast ime is still to come..around the first of August.

That's enough fish to keep me interested. Assuming the weather cooperates I'll have a report for Winchester Bay Sunday night. They did real well last weekend.

Has anyone fished in the ocean out of Ilwaco or Hammond? I saw that the charter limited out on Monday, but haven't heard anything since. Seems real hit or miss on the South Coast.
