I have only used them for steelhead TM, but have heard of guys using them successfully for Kings. Try the following colors: http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/blush.gif http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/tongue.gif and the frown face color up in the corner. Remember that you don't have to use the white backer rod, they can be found in colors too. Let us know how they work. - RT

Zaq, scent them moderately. They can hold too much in my opinion and result in "too much of a good thing is not a good thing" sort of thing. http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Rags do work on Kings too Timber,I perfer to use a herring oil- shrimp oil mix about 50/50 ,use it moderatly, as far as color goes stick to the reds and purples ,as a mater of fact I've done better on kings with the gray backer rod? go figure http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/confused.gif and 1 size larger than what you fish for Steelies,go larger on the hooks too I perfer a 2/0 for kings...tight lines... just my .02

I usually use 1/4 and 3/8 on steelhead and 1/2 on chum.Would you guys suggest 1/2 on kings too? Where I fished alot last year for kings they were hittin a small corky and yarn early in the run later that was to much and I went to just a small peice of red yarn they wouldnt touch just a small corky,It had to be yarn only and it had to be red.I suppose I better make up some in all sizes and experiment.

Zaq, I have posted my 2 favorite custom scent combos for Chinooks elswhere on here, but I can't remember where offhand so will repost. 'Nooks like scents in combos and like chems. Get a couple empty Pro-Cure 2 oz. injector bottles and buy the following oils fresh as possible by either Mike's or Pro-Cure (unless you can find a sardine oil that isn't quit so pungent as their's). 1st - 1/2 egg cure juice, 1/4 shrimp oil, 1/4 crawfish oil, (leave some room at the top), a few drops of Dr. Juice "Salmon" concentrate, 1/4 t. MSG, & 1/8 t. sodium sulfite. 2nd - 1/2 herring oil, 1/4 sardine oil, 1/4 squid oil (underated for 'nooks), & the Dr. J, S.S., & MSG. Shake real well now & before applying. I keep mine in the fridge during season & frozen off season. Those formulas have been better than any stock OTC scents I've used. Both can be used for anything, but I prefer the egg/shrimp version for such as rags, corkies/birdies, injecting prawns & sandshrimp. I prefer the baitfish version on plugs, Kwikfish, spinners/spoons, and injecting herring. For steelhead I reduce the amount of Dr. J, S.S., & MSG by half or you can leave it out. In it's place I put in 1 t. anise oil. Both are great for steelhead with those adjustments, especially the egg/shrimp. Let me know how it works for you Zaq. - Steve

TM you have the right idea, bring several sizes and experiment ,a lot depends on the size of water being fished ,smaller water go with a smaller profile rag and so on...see ya on the Nisqually hey picked upa nice 8 lb king saturday night off the beach near the Nisqually sorry didn't use a rag for that one...good luck

"Freeze! Now slowly put down your GLoomis with lure and slowly back away with your hands behind your head". - Emu Patrolman
Timber Man,
I see you hail from Shelton, which probably means you'll be looking at the Skok, Nisqually, Satsop, Hump, yes? The rags will work on any of these, but the key is finding the right water conditions. The low, clear flows of early fall don't really lend themselves to using rags. But if you find the Satsop falling with some color in it after a good October downpour, you can light the Kings up on rags. Your Chum-sized rags should work nicely in those water conditions.
Keep posting and let us know how the rags produce for you this fall......
Fish on.........

I have had some luck using rags for kings. Purely by accident the first time, caught me a springer one year while fishing for steelies. Also, hooked a really late King (December) on a rag a few years ago while fishing for early steelies. As I am no dummy it only took twice for me to conclude they work and start using rags for kings.
I usually make my rags out of the airheads rather than backer rod. I think those have more and a better action than plain backer rod. If you need a bigger profile you can just put two together or add a corkie or whatever you desire on top or bottom. I usually put a corkie on bottom if I want a larger profile.
also regarding the berkely, the only reason I bought a Loomis is they stopped making the Series One at Berkely. Personally I think it is as good as a loomis (or atleast the difference is negligible). The only problem is I only have an 8'6" and a 8'2". I went out and picked one up last year for $89 when the brought them back for promotion. but I would like one longer than 8'6". Saw a guy using one in Canada that was 10'6".
any idea's on where I can find one of these in a 10' or 10'6"?

Feeling pretty ignorant here, and please don't ban me from the BB for a stupid question, but what the heck is a "rag"????? I guess the same question applies to "backer rods" as well.

I know that back door exit feeling. Last night some punk broke into my truck and ripped me off. Lost a wallet, 3 gas cards, credit card, costco card, bimart card, library card http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/blush.gif they also got my proof of insurance card and the owners manual for the truck.
Maybe they will read up on changing the oil in the powerstroke and come back tonight to swap out the 15 quarts.
Probably not a family man since they left the stroller and diaper bag.

Osprey,
The 8'2" is what they termed MT (for plugging) - it is dark brown in color..the only one I have ever seen. I bought it to fish some of the smaller brushy rivers down where I grew up and it works great..first day out with it two casts two fish.
Picked it up back when the Yard Birds in your neck of the woods was going out of business.
When you say newer series 1 are you referring to the Berkely Air IM7?

Hey HS, don't you guys from Forks try to take credit for the yarn and eggs thing. It was us smarter NW Oregon guys who thought of that first! (JK http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/smile.gif ). And Osprey, with all of this talk about 9' to 10.5' fishing rods lately, I just want you to be comfortable knowing that it's not the length that counts; it's how you use it! http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/smile.gif - RT

Well DUH steve, I knew that and it's not the length of you're driver it's how many strokes you take http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
Scoopy :nope it's says series 1# it's one of those that has buzzes signature on it and the NSIA or what ever it says? there is no writing on the tip and thats about the only place I'm looking http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/wink.gif,it's a great rod
Wow Yard Birds that brings back memories..great store http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/smile.gifI still have tackle I bought when they closed the doors.

I dont know i kind of like a black eagle claw 1o and some deep red yarn and a little cluster of king eggs and short liter and just enough weight to keep you of the bootom be careful the bite is reel distinct but after you get the hang of it watch out!!! http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/smile.gif
