Ounce again thanks you all for your prayers thus far. Things have been going very good and I have been in little to no pain since my accident. Heck I have been playing in the mountains a little even. Today I am checking in at the hospital at 10:00am. I have surgery around 11:30 and probably wont be out until later tonight. I am hopeing for the best, I have a good surgeon, a good family who will also be there with me and good friends here at Ifish who I know will be there in my soul with me. Ounce again thanks for all your prayers they have helped. I am not really scared but I think nervous would be a better word.

update to come ounce I am out of surgery and able.

Thanks again

Steer Wrestling! you need prayers all right! seriously, that sucks, especially if it was your livelyhood...i blew my knee out in Basketball a long time ago...pretty much had to quit skiing, b-ball etc. Tough to find any good out of these things, but I told myself that maybe this happened for a reason, perhaps to keep me from a more serious injury...who knows, good luck and God Bless

I am startin to get a little flexibility back and walking is easier than before. I think I am gonna tuff it out and say forget the trip to the doc. I guess I am gonna have to start ropin as soon as I can stand up in my stirups.

I’m glad your knee is feeling a bit better. I have a friend I went to college with who runs in the steer wrestling circuit; competes all around here in the northwest. I always ask him, “Don what compels you to throw yourself off a perfectly good horse?” He gives me one word in reply, “Rodeo!” :smash: It’s a sickness I guess.

I’ll keep praying for your recovery.

A big change! But embrace it, don't fight it. Listen to the doctors, and they will help you out. And pray for help coping and for direction.
Remember our lives are like books, we seem to focus on one chapter. But The next chapter is worth reading too. Turn the page and enjoy it!

I've had both ACL's reconstructed...So, I know where you are. Mentally it's really tough thinking about what could happen.

I had my first one (rt) in February of 02 and (lt) in August of 02. It was a seriously screwed up year. The maniscus isn't that big of a deal. They will cut the loose fibers out of the way to you have more flexability again. Once the maniscus is loose it will cause sticking while moving the knee.

Now the ACL is a bit different. If you can imagine a rubber band holding your bones together under the knee cap..you will have a general idea what the ACL is...it keeps your knee from over extending...front or back. It will feel better once the actual damage has been done...but then you will walk on an uneven surface and your knee will buckle...you will land flat on your hiney...and the knee will hurt again.

Get the surgery..and save yourself more time lost with the fear of what will happen.

The doctor sent me home with a machine known as a CPM (continuous passive motion). It will stretch your knee when you don't have the strength to do it. I was able to avoid all the lost days in physical therapy by utalizing that machine. The first surgery was done by an old school doctor who retired the day he released me. He'd done 3 other knee surgeries on the same knee when he reconstructed the ACL. The second one was done by a younger doctor thinking he had a better way....I asked how much rehab I would be doing...he said 6 months....I rejected that plan and had him perform the same surgery as the old guy...the guy I trusted.

Both surgeries used the Patela Tendon Graph...and I haven't had any problems...well...take that back...they get a little sore when I snowboard...but that's snowboarding.

I blew the first ACL snowboarding...and then 4 months later blew the second Wakeboarding...I need to stay away from the boards...it's just tooo much fun!! The first doctor told me I was good to go...as long as I wore a brace for any rough physical activity....so I guess I'm saying it's not a year lost....just about 4 months of tough walking. The pain meds aren't needed (for me anyway). Walk through the pain...when it hurts....grit your teeth and walk normal. It will be the best thing for it. I see guys and gals not bending the knee for months after the surgery and have residual problems with back pain, hip pain...just from not walking normally.

Peace be with you...this is a tough time...but you will get through it and probably have a easier time walking than you've ever had in your life.

Super competitive athletes like you are always surprising the experts by being able to rehabilitate themselves when most people thought they couldn't. We've seen this countless time in sports. Look at the baseball pitchers that have come back better than ever after "Tommy John" surgery!

If not, your hard working nature may translate into something else that will be God's plan for your life. :angel1:

so on the brite side I blew out my knee broke my anterior cruchiate lig and fouled up my cartilage in june. I went to the doctor and had it scoped cartilage trimed then drained and they said the ligiment was broken and I had a dime sized hole in my cartilage. they trimed up the cartilage best they could and my doc said that some people do just fine not having it repaird so I took his advice cause I was on a collage scholorship. 6 months later I went to nationals and placed on the 10 meter platform and three meter spring board. Im 40 now and yes I have poped my knee from time to time and it swells up but it really hasent been that bad. I water ski, wake board and aggressively ski and coach and I bow hunt elk-yes its sore at the end of a hard day but its nothing a hot tub cant take care of. So for me it wasnt the end of the world I just had to make some adjustments and learned to live with it -good luck and may peace be with you. besides it took my focus off sports and allowed me to concentrate on school and my degree. I gess you could say it poped me back into reality that diving wasnt gona get me through life. I like to think of it as gods way of saying lets try somthing different and as always it turned out like he planed. besides you dont need good knees siting in a boat reeling in fish.

thanks everyone, I am doing ok and have surgery planned for march 21st if therapy goes well. I really appreciate the advice and help. I have actually been getting to do things I havent in a long time(steelhead fishing, go on a date, lol just to name a few) because I was busy with school and rodeo. I am starting to see that the Lord still has some great things planned for me down the road and I am accepting with open arms. I have set one goal through this all and that is be healthy enough to fight fire this summer again for ODF out of Pendleton. I have taken actions to help myself get there and am hoping the lord will help me out too.

Ounce again thanx, and I will let everyone know how the surgery goes!

Jon
