I have recently acquired a downrigger and am contemplating using it for ocean salmon fishing next week out of Astoria. Can anyone advise as to techniques such as fishing depth range, rigging etc. I have virtually zero experience with downriggers. Thanks.

The simplist way is to run a plain cut plug off of the release clip at least 25' behind the ball. You could add a flasher, same distance back but run the cut plug 44 - 60" behind the flasher. If it's silvers your after fish in the top 50' of water, kings will start there and go deeper as the sun gets up in the sky. This will get ya started http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Be careful not to bury the line too deep in the clip. A test: Try lowering it into the water a little way and then take up the slcak and give one good jerk on the pole, if it doesn't come free you have it to deep.
