White backer is actually foam insulation that comes in a long rod that varies in Diameter. The white color has become hard to find with the most common color being grey.
The rod is cut up into pieces like little weiner pieces and yarn is cross threaded to make a bobber type lure. (similar to the aeropuff)

If you want white or any other color try this. If you go to Kmart, Toys r us you can buy a 6' long piece of closed cell foam in orange, green, purple or whatever color they have. The are called water winnies. If you are around a pool you will see the kids using them. Or go to Boaters world and buy a white foam boat bumper. Cut either to the length you want plus 1/2 ". Go to a hobby shop, and buy a piece of brass or Alumunim tubing the diam of the rag you want. Take a small file and sharpen the inside of the tube end. Then run the sharpened tube thru the foam. It will cut nice little circle pieces. You can make them any length you want and then cut to size. Cant't find air hose. Go to your local Wendys or Mc D. and pick up some of those red coffee stirrers. They make good inserts.
Have fun making up the size you want with the color of the foam you want.

I have been using white backer or (caulking rod) for over 10 years for steahead and salmon. It works greats for both rags for driftfishing and keeping baites in the strike zone. I always use bait scents and change the foam frequently as it will loose bouancy. You can also get desirable effects placing it on the wire of home made spinners to get them to spinner at slow speeds by creating force against your weight. I used to buy mine at lumbermans in newport but I think there is one in this area. They used to carry 1/4" and 3/8".

The air hose can be bought through Jan's netcraft. They have a online store. The straws work also just not as tough.
