I've got a Merc 200/140. I just took the pump apart to replace the water pump, sharpen the jet impellor blades, and just to take a look at everything. The wear ring needed to be replaced so I bought a new one. The old one had been ground down quite a bit at the very bottom end in what looks like an attempt to smooth out the water flow. The theory sounds great, but how much does this really help? I just couldn't bring myself to file off that much material.

Also, my zinc is mounted above the water line. Any ideas? My pump is getting pitted pretty bad and boiling the paint.

I think your zinc will be most effective below the water line. Kinda like putting shoes in backwards, I guess you could do it but it would make the walk a bit uncomfortable.

My thoughts exactly. What are my options? Drill holes in the pump unit itself? Get a longer bolt for the shoe and put the zinc on there?

I don't think I would drill any holes in the pump unit itself. You do need to find a way for that zinc to be in the water so it can do it's job though. Without looking at your set up all I can do is suggest a longer bolt.

On my 23 Super Vee Pro, I drilled holes on the metal shelf on the bottom of the transom and mounted 2 large zincs on the top of the metal flap that sticks out. I use recessed bolts so it would be flush to the bottom. It where I've seen many mounted. If I'm in moored in salt, I always put the motor in the up position out of the water. HT

Thanks a lot for the tips. I'll get some zincs on soon.

Any suggestions about the grinding of the wear ring for performance? Anyone have any experience with this?

Best answer IMO! I don't understand why the SuperV's don't come with factory zincs?

Steven's marine mounts a zinc on the back side of the intake shoe. I bought the same zinc kit and plan to do the same. you have to drill and tap out the holes.

Lots of good info. I like Hawaiian Times tip on putting the zincs on the hull. I'd rather not drill any holes in the shoe. Those bolts are already too much fun to get out.

Why do my aluminum engine parts erode and not my aluminum hull? They are both electrically connected to each other.

Any experience with the performance grinding of the wear ring to smooth water flow?

Thanks guys (and gal)
