18' alumiweld flatbottom guide model. Currently has a older Mercury 150 2 stroke motor. Been thinking about upgrading the motor to a 4 stroke. I usually have between to to 4 folks on board when fishing and don't want to underpowered.
What size motor will work on this boat without sinking it?

another 150 two stroke would be primo...I think a 150 4S would be underpowered

Stick with a 2 stroke. E-Tec's have been getting a lot of good reviews from guys running them back east in the salt. I know a couple of people, here in Oregon, who have been happy as well. It is what I am planning to upgrade to from my Honda 130. The uninformed will tell you that it is just a modified FICHT but that is not the case. Do some DD on the Envinrude and you might be surprised at what you find out. They are also offering a 7 year warranty (at least they were the last time I checked). The biggest downside, that I can see, is that there are only 2 places in the PDX metro area to have them worked on.
Going to a 150 4 stroke, from a 2 stroke, I would bet that you would lose performance because of the increased weight and reduced holeshot. For an example*, on weight differences, you could put on 200 hp E-Tec that weighs 419 pounds or a 200hp Honda 4 @ 588 pounds. That equals a small adult/large child riding, or not riding, in the boat.
*You need to contact Alumaweld for the engine weight and horsepower limits.

Bernie my man,
If your still going to be using the jet, go with another 150 2 stroker. If you are going prop, the 115 on up would be the ticket. Happy hunting :flowered:

:yeahthat: Yep, 4-stroke pumps "suck" (LOL) for boats your size IMO.

Can you get jet pumps for E-tecs?
Bernie-
Take a look at the Yami V-Max 150 HPDI. No problem using a pump, and the block and motor is tried and true. Quieter than old carb models of 2 strokes, and almost as efficient as the new 4 strokes.
I spent more than a year looking for replacements for my twins, and I ended up going this route with the 200's.
You could check out the Merc 150 Opti to stay with the same controls and cables. Spindrifter purchased a new Opti and is very happy with the cost and performance. Not as low on emmisions as 4 stroke, but WAY better than old 2 stokes. Both Opti and HPDI meet emmision requirements and you have standard pumps readily available from the manuf.
Even though the Optis were less, I would have had to change gauges and controls, and I just couldn't get over the Opti-bomb hurdle.

Not sure about the pricing on the smaller ETECS... but when I looked at them last fall for a 225hp, they were more expensive than any of the 4-strokes...OUCH. Gotta pay for all that marketing I guess.

I recently bought a 150 vmax for my 20ft flatbottom wooldridge. Sweet motor, great hole shot...wouldn't change a thing.
