I'm a field biologist and it seems like I've spend a lot of time staring at broken down or dying outboard motors, wishing I knew had some mechanical skills and could do something.

Anyone know of any good courses? Other ways to learn? I don't have time to do a full apprenticeship -- but could certainly devote some weekends / evenings to learning.

Mount Hood Comm College used to teach a small engine repair course, but it looks like it has been discontinued.

Other suggestions welcome!

Thanks,
Richard

Richard,
Too bad you don't live in Central Oregon. We have a complete Marine Tech Series at COCC. We meet Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Checkout www.cocc.edu (http://www.cocc.edu)

OJT.... If you are like me, you purchase an old boat and out of necessity you learn as you go. A couple years of that and you know a 2-stroke inside and out. There really isn't much to them and I wouldn't hesitate to do a complete rebuild myself.

Gladstone had a class offered evenings a couple of years ago that was reasonable. Might give them a call, I think it was the community classes

Factory service manuals can walk your through anything. They are expensive, but so is school. The internet should fill any holes you may have in understanding what's going on.
