This year i think im going to endulge myself in a little shad fishing. Unfortunatly, i dont have the luxary of owning a boat (besided my 30 year old rotting dingy). Anyone out there know of good bank fishing holes on the Willamette or Columbia? What is the best tactic from the bank. Tossing spoons/spinners/jigs? I'd appreciate any tips or advice!!

Also, anyone know of any good bank fishing spots on the columbia or squaw-fish (northern pike-minnow or whatever). I was thinkin about saving a few smolts, and making a few bucks....

My first adventure with shad was right off the locks at Cascade Locks. While the concrete ambiance might leave something to be desired, there is the beauty of the gorge, a park, a productive group to watch catch fish, often some native dipping for show, and a relatively snagless drift. For all you can handle on a fly rod, rig about 2-3 inches of 1/4 inch pencil lead off the tag end of a blood knot 24 inches above your favorite shad dart or green or red and white fly. Let enough line out of the reel to get the fly to the bottom, pitch the rig directly upstream next to the wall, let it drift through, pick up, and do it again. The occasional blueback picks up your offerring, and hold on when a steelhead takes off like a freight train in the current. Good Luck, Billy.

Get some small twister tail jig heads and
very small chartreuse tails. Leave a drop
weight of at least 12 inches or as desired.
Toss it out and bounce it, jig it back.
They will hit it hard. Make the jig head
red.

I have had good success on the catwalk in West Linn. To get there you must get on the west side of the west linn bridge, take the road that goes right by the police Station and go through the gate on the left, Its a fairly steep drivelway down to the parking lot. The trail to the catwalk is at the south end of the parking lot. I usually throw flicker spinners and green grubs with about a half ounce of pencil lead with a 22" leader. I would advise you to take sturdy gear for the possibility of hooking a summer or a springer are definatly there. I have hooked many a shad and springers there. Good Luck

Go to Bradford Island and cast a shad dart as far as you can, let it sink a bit and then reel in in slowly. There are good spots on either side of the island. Also there is some excellent fishing for shad on the Umpqua, fish the Yellow creek area at just past mile post 11 out of Elkton on highway between Elkton and Sutherlin. Use 1/16 oz. crappie jigs with chartuese twister tails that have silver sparkle in them.
