RT, et al,
I support your efforts to bring attention to the current situation regarding the Columbia river Spring fishery. I hope progress can be made to change the regs for 2001 should returns be as predicted. Nothing will happen this year but we should make a loud noise before preliminary regs are established for next year.
I'm very concerned that the upcoming protest could backfire on all of us. I don't support the location, or timing of these protests. Too many potential problems; negative interaction with NA's, unwanted media spin, misinterpreted by the general public as an attack on tribal fishing rights. Our problems are not with tribal fishing rights but with Federal policy makers. I know everybody on the DB has stated this, but a protest in that location and time could hurt more than help.
There are several opportunities in the near future (meetings of the NMFS, ODFW and the OFWC ) to bring attention to our plight not only for Col. springers, but more importantly for the Fall fishery on the Columbia. These events not only could get media attention and make a strong point to policy makers, but would in no way be confused with tribal fishing rights.
RT, I hope you reconsider the plan for the next two weekends. I don't want to squash enthusiasm, I just want our efforts to be as productive and helpful as possible. I will support and attend any and all "attention raising " events, but NOT during or near tribal fishing for reasons I've stated above.
BTW, Wisdom, please continue to participate on this and other DBs. Divergent viewpoints are critical to a well rounded discussion. I look forward to seeing more of your opinions and anyone else who wishes to have a voice in the many topics covered on Jennie's Ifish sites.
RT, I hope the removal of posts was a one time mistake, I will be very saddened should this happen again.
Good fishin' and successful protests,
Dogfishboy
