RT, et al,
I support your efforts to bring attention to the current situation regarding the Columbia river Spring fishery. I hope progress can be made to change the regs for 2001 should returns be as predicted. Nothing will happen this year but we should make a loud noise before preliminary regs are established for next year.

I'm very concerned that the upcoming protest could backfire on all of us. I don't support the location, or timing of these protests. Too many potential problems; negative interaction with NA's, unwanted media spin, misinterpreted by the general public as an attack on tribal fishing rights. Our problems are not with tribal fishing rights but with Federal policy makers. I know everybody on the DB has stated this, but a protest in that location and time could hurt more than help.

There are several opportunities in the near future (meetings of the NMFS, ODFW and the OFWC ) to bring attention to our plight not only for Col. springers, but more importantly for the Fall fishery on the Columbia. These events not only could get media attention and make a strong point to policy makers, but would in no way be confused with tribal fishing rights.

RT, I hope you reconsider the plan for the next two weekends. I don't want to squash enthusiasm, I just want our efforts to be as productive and helpful as possible. I will support and attend any and all "attention raising " events, but NOT during or near tribal fishing for reasons I've stated above.

BTW, Wisdom, please continue to participate on this and other DBs. Divergent viewpoints are critical to a well rounded discussion. I look forward to seeing more of your opinions and anyone else who wishes to have a voice in the many topics covered on Jennie's Ifish sites.

RT, I hope the removal of posts was a one time mistake, I will be very saddened should this happen again.

Good fishin' and successful protests,

Dogfishboy

dogfishboy: i agree, disagree: i agree, that if we do not represent ourselves carefully.. the news media will spin it out of context, but will chose to disagree,, that this is not the time or place. location is everything when u r looking to get media coverge, with out it,u r looking at a driveby sight seen only. we do need the media.. everthing i have seen so far ,, has been posted to show this is not a fight about the indians netting, but that we, feel that we are once again being shut out of the pictre...my wife is a full blood indian, and has sugested that we draw up a letter to the indian tribal counsel. stating our support for thier rights, but that we are only asking for ours in return(like she said, no one will under stand this more than a native american.) and fax it to them. this is only a start. we should take this chance to voice our opinions. then plan our next chance, (odfw meeting ,, letter campaign.etc..etc..)and let them know we want an equal consideration.. and please dont forget the future hatchery closings..now is the perfect time to start.. if not now,, then when!!!!

DFB- Read thru to conclusion my reply to "Censorship?" by Bait O Eggs to find out the facts before you get upset with what occured. Also read there that this rally will NOT be anti-Indian which I said from the beginning. I have been given assurance from reliable sources (a certainty that will be revealed at the proper time by the political participants)that with prudence and NO anti-Indian or even anti-netting lingo, that Cascade Locks will be a good place to express that we feel that we deserve consideration on a selective (fin clipped) Col. mainstem quota fishing opportunity. Best opportunity for news cameras to interview any of us, where we will NOT CRITISIZE INDIANS OR NETTING- ONLY EXPRESS DESIRE TO HAVE A FAIR OPPORTUNITY FOR US SPORTFISHERMEN on this & next year's abundance. Also remember that the Tribal Commission did not consider us sportfishermen to share the bounty with and should also know that we deserve a fair chance- for fish that we paid for (that is NOT anti-Indian, it is pro-sportsmen!). And those "meetings" rarely ever change their already made up minds- mostly it's just PR. Read my "SAT. RALLY...." post thread all the way thru for new details and suggestions. - Steve
