Sportfishers:
Please show up this Sat. 13th, 10:00 a.m. to noon, at the town of Cascade Locks just above Bonneville Dam to protest the unfair non-consideration toward sportfishermen in regards to the unexpectedly large abundance of Columbia R. hatchery springers this year. Rep.s for the Fed.s, States, and Col.Tribal Commission determined that there will be such an excess of springers this year that they decided to allow Native American netting and selling of these fish thru May. They gave no consideration for even a small mainstem Col. quota for sportsmen on these fish that we paid for thru lic. fees, taxes, and increased power rates, we believe. Since the collective bio.'s do not think the netting will significantly impact the very small percentage of native springers, there is simply no justification not to give us a fishing quota too. WE NEED BIG NUMBERS! So all of you show up for the news cameras, carrying signs! We don't begrudge the Indians getting a share of this abundance, only begrudge us not getting a fair share! So NO anti- Indian activity please. This should help give us a shot at a second half of May quota. Importantly, it will help us get a longer Col. mainstem quota on next year's even larger predicted run of springers! We will meet at the park boatramp parking lot toward the east end of town where most of these fish are being brought in, and we should have some representation also at the Char Burger resturant near the west end where many of the fish are being sold. --- This is a repost of the previous anouncement; due to one individual's very unfairly negative reply post about this rally- for unknown motives (I hope there isn't need to deal with that uncalled for type of posting on this BB again). Everyone else has been very supportive and eager to get after it! Read the Feb./Mar. 2000 STS Magazine article by Buzz Ramsey, of Luhr Jensen fame, entitled "NSIA Fin Clips - What Politics Do For Your Fishing and My Job" on page 24, to see what an organized effort has already done successfully to save sportfishing opportunity challenged by the Fed.s & special interest big money industries. Organized numbers do work! I will be there and I hope to see many of you. You Wind/Drano guys can fish the short early morning bite there and still make the rally, then head to the lower Sandy, Clack. or Willamette for afternoon fishing (it'd be good if someone fishing the early Wind/Drano bite would tack up a flier about the rally near the boatramps there for the fishers leaving by 9:30 to 10). Or you can attend the rally and go fish the less crowded afternoon bite at the Wind, so join us. (Also read the joint post "Well I've heard the complaints- we need action" by Dan!- and the positive reply posts there). - Steve

Steve - I will post this on the WAA message board. This is as important as anything we as sportfishermen can do. What we have to be carefull of is not makeing this an anti-Tribal protest, as the TV people will make us look like intollerant thugs. To speak clearly that we don't want more fish just a more equitable share of what's allready alloted ..........

Be there or be Square.....Barney

I agree Steve. That's exactly the way we should present ourselves.

SIGNS: Barnyard- You brought up a very important point concerning Native American issues. I have been extensively on the phone talking to people REALLY in the know and actually in the political arena with these issues. I was informed that not only should there be no anti-Indian sentiment present, but that it will carry political risk to even present anti-netting sentiment. I have it from the utmost reliable sources that we should instead accentuate that us sportfishermen can fish selectively on the abundant Col. Hatchery springers that are approximately 40% fin clipped (adipose fin) in this year's run, and the % of fin-clips will raise quite significantly for next year's bigger run (much as like the fin clipping going on with the Willamette R. springer run). It was suggested to me that signs should say such as "Sportsmen Fish Selectively", "Salmon Mean Jobs!", and "We deserve A Fair Share of These Fish We Helped Pay For" or "Fair Quota For Sportfishermen Too!". See you there- it will be a nice day weatherwise (BBQ & beer/pop afterward anyone?). - Steve
