I am in total shock over this. Just got this in the mail and I can't believe it. I am mad. Watch me fight this one. This hits too close to home for me. Jennie, usually hum ho over politics..... is going to fight this one tooth and nail.....

Hi Jenny
I thought you would want to be informed that Nehalem Hatchery will begin the process of closing effective July 1 2001. The
closure will likely take place over a 4 month period being completed by Nov. 1 2001. This proposed closure is due to the
Sunset Clause placed on the License fee increase and the general fund dollars the department received from the Oregon
legislature to cover costs incurred from July 1 1999 through June 30 2001. ODFW needed to submit a budget for the period
covering July 1 2001 through June 30 2003 with a cost reduction to reflect not receiving the fee increase established in 1999
and the general fund allocation , allocated in 1999. Not receiving these dollars for the 2001 - 2003 biennium will require
ODFW to operate at the same funding amount received back in June of 1997. There are approximately 40 ODFW positions
targeted in this reduction package throughout the agency. ODFW is not asking for any additional funding , We are just asking
for about the same amount as last biennium. The closure of Nehalem Hatchery is undoubtedly going to have significant impacts
to the Winter steelhead fisheries on the North Fk Nehalem as well as the Necannicum River as these systems will no longer be
stocked with hatchery Steelhead. Nehalem Hatchery also stocks the Necannicum River with 26,000 fall chinook smolts
and the North Fork Nehalem with 200,000 Coho smolts annually. The hatchery also stocks area lakes with surplus Winter
Steelhead Adults and legal and trophy Rainbow Trout. If you find this news to be upsetting, then you should inform your
legislator that you support the ODFW add back package. If this news doesn't concern you then do nothing.

I think a majority of us are with you on this one Jen! Ooouch!! Even though a minority few wouldn't mind having a low pressure C&R nate fishery there, that would fly in the face of historical success and popularity for the N.F.- as well as benefitting surrounding fisheries such as the Necanicum! I simply do NOT see how this could even come into consideration given the overall health of the economy. Is there some influential wealthy republican non-fishermen that would rather see a tax cut for the rich or the funding shifted to some other self-interest areas or what??? This is not a cop-out; I am literally too recovery challenged right now to do the ground work neccesary to investigate what is behind this and who to have write-in protest campaigns to. I ask for anyone able to look into this and post info. here for our many readers. We all have some writing/e-mailing to do for both this issue and also the issue of fair consideration for sportfishermen on the over-abundance of hatchery Columbia springers that the Indians will get to net and sell all of May, and predicted even more next spring.- HELP! - Thanks for your efforts in this regard people. - Steve

Could it be a form of blackmail from ODFW??? To pick one of their best-run, most
popular hatcheries and tie everything on to it in the hopes it will carry the day with legislators??? To benefit the funding of the wild fish policy? What?
Who knows..... That would be awful... But this has been suggested to me more than once now... Is it true?? ARGH! That would sicken me. Please tell me it is not true!!!

Look forward soon to a list of e mail addresses to write to for causes like this, and e mail templates for proper formatting to the powers that be.
I will try and make it as simple and painless as I can for you to take a minute and let people know THIS IS NOT OK!!!

Absolutely!! e-mail to every address we can find, and call every number possible. But, I've been told several times that in the new era of easy e-mails that it can now be more effective to send a letter the old fashioned way, with a good old fashioned signature at the bottom. My suggestion is to send e-mails, and then send basically the same thing printed and signed via snail mail.

Jennie....I have often heard the same thing about the blackmail routine. Usually I think it's just people making things up, but this time it almost looks obvious. One of the most visible and successful hatchery programs within easy driving distance of Portland, and they "need" to shut it down? HMMMMMMMMMMM.

By the way, who originated that e-mail that you got? I'm sure it's a reliable source, maybe also a contact for future information?

I agree that we should contact our legislators, but it is important to contact State legislators. It is probably not helpful to contact federal officials concerning a State budget issue.

You can get contact information for the senator from your district at http://www.leg.state.or.us/99senmembers.html

Contact information for representatives is at http://www.leg.state.or.us/district.htm

Boy this bugs me also, everyone knows that the majority of the funds come from the Metro area. When I hear of all the money spent down south on the Rogue hatchery to provide a fishery for all the Liberal California Democrates to fish in Oregon. Why not close that hatchery? JKSO, What makes me ill is if they keep taking away all we will have left is carp fishing hmmm??? Seriously all kidding aside thanks for posting the e-mail addresses I will write an e-mail and send it to all of them regardless of party affiliation

It is 2001 Also there is a public meeting tonight at the portland office at
7pm to discuss and receive public comment on the budget reduction package
and our strategic plan. We had this same meeting in Newport last night and I
did not hear much support for the hatchery. I did here public testimony that
ODFW is spending to much money on salmon. If you want your voice to be heard
I suggest you attend one of the public meetings, and tonight is the closest
one to your area.
