View Full Version : Indians Get To Sell Extra Netted Col. Springers - No Sportfishing??

The upriver Columbia run of spring chinooks is so high and above expectations this spring that the Indian tribes are going to be allowed to sell netted springers for the first time in 23 years. All thru May! Nice. I haven't heard anything about allowing even a small quota of mainstem springers for us sportfishermen on this apparent over-abundance of fish which are a vast majority hatchery fish- that we mostly paid for!!! What the heck is going on here?? Who the heck do the Indian netters have by the b*lls that they can do this while no consideration is given sportfishermen- other than to consider cutting us off from all Col. fall chinook fishing (our 1% impact). The Thur. Oregonian front page article said it was a combination of Fed., State, & Tribal officials who decided there are so many fish that this would be a good way to use the overabundance of nearly 200,000 springers! WELL, THANKS FOR THINKING OF US AGAIN! WE'LL BE THINKING OF YOU WHEN IT COMES TIME TO VOTE IN MORE FAIR LEADERSHIP! I'm angry- not at Indians given a fair chance at some abundance, but at the exclusion of same for the paying sportfishers!!! Eric Neiwert of NW Steelheaders or Buzz Ramsey of NSIA (National Sportfishing Industry Assoc.) or Jim Martin (former head of ODFW that is protesting the likely fall sportfish closures)- HELP! I'm literally tied down right now, and not able to sit and type for long, at least for another couple weeks. Can someone out there contact them to get involved if they haven't already? Will someone please find out the specific agencies and leaders names that have overlooked us fishers, so we can all mail in protests? Jack salmon counts have them predicting an even better run next year before a drop-off the following year of 2002, so let's get after them with a write-in protest campaign (everyone- numbers will help a lot), not only for this May but for more consideration toward a mainstem allocation sportfishery next spring!- Any other ideas anyone? - Steve

I read the same story and couldn't believe it either. For what it's worth, I have the address for the ODFW and their fish division phone number. I've talked to Charlie Corrarino who has been helpful in the past.

I emailed Charlie Corrarino and received this reply:

Thanks for your email. Between May 8-19 I will be traveling throughout the state to conduct a series of public meetings and will not be in the office until Monday, May 22nd.. I will respond to your email when I return.

Charlie Corrarino

I suppose it'll be conveniently over by then.

Out of state or in would help! The more people that will take 5 minutes to write a protest the stronger our voice will be! And remember, this is also for consideration for next years even bigger perdicted run- so get after it people. Write others than Corriano. - Steve

I e-mailed Charles Corrarino a letter stating how upset I am at this. I also sent a copy to RT and he responded saying it is a good example of the kind of letters everyone should consider sending. He also asked that I post a copy of the letter here.

Charles,
Even though I do not currently reside in the state of Oregon right now, I will be returning home soon. I am worried about some of your proctices such as clubbing springers on the head when your hatcheries reach their quota and then selling them for dog food. These fish survived the river (going and coming), and the harsh environment of the ocean and you say they are not strong enough to survive? Was this strain not started with the wild fish to begin with? And now you are opening a netting season for the Indians on the Columbia for surplus springers. What about the recreational fisherman? Does not our license fees and sporting gear tax entitle us to just a little consideration? You say we are ignorant. You say we should be your friends. I say you are ignorant if you do not give us, the recreational fishermen, the same consideration for a chance at the surplus springers that you give away to the Indians.

Don't misunderstand me, my wife is a full blood Indian. I do not begrudge the Indians a right to net, but it is my tax money and many like me that support the hatcheries that have produced the surplus springers. Is it because we do not have an active lobby group in Washington and the Indians are well represented? When will the recreational fishermen get a say or at least an equal consideration. If you think I am the only one that is upset with the decisions the ODFW have made and are making with the states fish and wildlife, you are sadly mistaken. There is a very large grass roots organization growing in opposition to your policies. To ignore us is your choice but I believe it will eventually come back to bite you in the ass.

I recieved the same e-mail back from Charles Corrarino that RT did saying he will be out of the office and will respond when he returns. I urge all of you to write to him. He will have some responding to do when he does return.

Just FYI for those who haven't gotten these answers before. The e-mail response from Charlie C. is just e-mail answering machine, automatically sending the same "answering machine" message back to anyone who writes. Might as well find someone else to write to or wait till he gets back.
