Went to the Santiam in Stayton yesterday. I got there around 9 AM because I had a dentist appointment earlier. Around ten I hooked up, and wouldn't you know it that darn fish shattered the base of my brand new rod! First time I'd used it, first fish I'd hooked on it! I'm just having the worst luck this year. Well, we managed to get the line cut and tied onto my buddy's rod so I could finish playing my fish, but during that time, it got wrapped around something in the river, and we ended up breaking off. Needless to say, that killed fishing for me! Then on top of it, one of my employees was heading home, saw me, and stopped to show me three limits of trout that she, her boy, and her friend had gotten in an hour at Detroit. I guess they found out where the truck puts them in! I'm never gonna hear the end of it! "Sure.... you broke your rod. Uh-huh. On a fish... sure. That's why you're fishless and we're not!"

I saw a couple of guys working the Santiam yesterday AM as I crossed the bridge on my way to work-- must have been you. Thanks for the update- although I live close to the river- Aumsville- haven't been out yet. I'm still pretty green at steelheading in this part of the world-- how about sharing what meathods you were using? Are summer steelies in yet, or are you after Chinooks? I have only fished for trout on the N Santiam, great success swinging nymphs, loads of fun!

It might have been us you saw, but there were
two guys who left when we arrived a little
after nine. I was drifting spoons. I hooked
it on a silver steelie with orange stripes.
My buddy had a couple of strikes on spin and
glows, but no hookups.
