With it open for the first time in years and the biggest springer run in many years going over Bonn. I figured you guys would be havin' some fun there. Probably the same for the Klickitat and others. Thanks for the report. BTW- Let us know when the salmonfly hatch gets goin' pretty good.

I was at Bonneville on Sat. and the salmon I saw were about 60% fin clipped! Are you fishing at the mouth?...or is it secret....I personally wouldn't be there anyway as the moles are digging every where...ha!

Advise please - I'm very interested in fishing the Deschutes in the next few weeks for springers. Does anyone have any tips that might be helpful? I'm sort of looking for locations and techniques. Thanks

moleman we're fishing at Sherar Bridge, its about 35 miles south of The Dalles just west of Tygh valley. Its a bait area.

Mike, like i said head to Tygh valley and take a left you will see a sigh saying Sherar bridge. Then comes the fun part finding a place to fish. A word to the wise, first time down take some time and check some of the holes out and see how their fishing it,if you don't it won't be long before someone tells you were to put that pole. The tackle we use is pretty heavy
20# maxima, 4,5,6 oz sinkers and green spin and glows. Eggs and tuna balls are the bait of choice.Hope this helps, see ya on the river.

Mike- I haven't fished springers on the Deschutes R. in years. I think I would rather not hassle with that crowd in the bait only area, and not just to get away from people. Those springers are good lure strikers as they ascend the lower river (not as good as the summer nates there; but what fish are?). Try a size 4 Bud spinner (or Blue Fox Vibrax if you drive a Turbo Porche) in a variety of water. For the few real deep 'nook holder holes, use a little extra weight to drift/swing/retrieve them near bottom. Also use good plugs such as Warts, Tadpolys, & Hot Shots by either wading out or standing on an outcroping to cast & swing them from above a good hole, or work them down along deep seams where the current is strong enough to get good action near large boulders. AND... if you have a well tuned K14 Kwikfish in a good color (such as copper with red tail), use about a 40" leader tied onto the mainline swivel, crimp on about 3" to 4" of pencil lead on a swivel tag, sharpen the 2 siwash hooks, and if legal put on a little scent....well, if the fish are in the above types of water you WILL hook up! Either hike/bike up from the mouth or drive up to Maupin and down into the areas above Mack's Canyon to find good water with few fishermen. Fish on! - Steve
