Hey, I'm headed to the Deschutes for a few days. I was wondering if anyone out there had a few flies to suggest for this time of year. We usually go with bead head nymphs and wooly buggers. Any info would be appreciated.
I would bring 4 patterns. There is often an early morning mayfly hatch, though sparce, so I would bring some sulfers or PMDs. There is almost always some Baetis activity, so I would have something to cover them. A wide variety of small net spinning caddis live as small, bright green nymphs. They are important because twice a day they let go of their rock and drift to a new one. They all drift at the same time so they create an underwater hatch. Finally, the stones are starting to move around which means they occasionally break loose in the current so a heavily weighted stone type nymph pattern is important. An important tool for fishing the D this time of year is a bug net so you can sample what is in the current. Check the water at various depths and locations in the current to see where you find good numbers of nymphs and to identify what they are. Oh, and have a great time!
thanks alot Pete. It will be a fun trip.

I always stop at the Fly Fishing Shop in Welches on my way over the mountain and ask mark Bockman what is going on over there. They are good guys, honest, and pretty well in touch with the D and what's going on over there.
Good Luck!
