I have a new fishing partner who is just starting out fishing for bass and panfish. I want to get him something, as a present, to keep his interest up and going. I was thinking about one of those 400+ piece panfish kits you see advertized but I don't know. He has a nice set of rods and reels but not much in the way of baits.

Any suggestions?

The problem with those big kits is that only about 50 of the jigs are anything you would use. I would get him a few of the baits you always use and some jig heads.

Does he flyfish? It's a great way to nail panfish, and loads of fun when you've got one on. You can get a decent panfish rod for $30 at Bi-Mart, Wal-Mart, or GI Joes. Add $15 for a Shakespeare single action clicker reel, $20 for one of the shorter 3M flylines at Bi-Mart, $5 for the dacron backing, if that much. Not sure if that's how much you were looking to spend, as I don't know what those 500 piece kits run. But you could get him decently setup to flyfish for panfish for around $65 if he doesn't already flyfish - and it's a great way to fish for panfish.

That, or just get him a bunch of 1/16 and 1/32nd oz jigs, and a bunch of curly tail grubs and tube jigs and some good floats.

Take him on a small shopping spree and have him pick out some bass gear with your help. Lures spark the desire to go fishing more than a reel or a pole. If he has some productive lures he will be hooked for life. It's better to have a few GOOD lures than a box of stuff that he will never use. Get him some 3 inch senko lures!!!!!!! :smash:  :bigshock: :yay: :yay: :laugh:Roger
