I have been serching for fly patterns that are killer on trout that you just can't buy at a fly shop. I am looking to put together a awsome exotic nymph box for my Cousin who is fly fishing these days but dosent tie due to eye problems, Anyway I was thinking of putting up your favorite exotic nymph photo here and instructions. I know of many already in the westfly catolog but I am looking for true preformers here. And Yes I tied up some wilted spinag. any others?? One that I have also is a tied down caddis that Jeff at stewarts fly shop turned me on to . Man thats a great fly. I'll post a pic when I can get it.
A fly that seems to consistently work for me, at least in still water, is Mercers Poxyback Callibaetis. I don't have a picture or the recipe and I think you can get it in fly shops.

Gottafish- Love this fly!! Will try this one. This is one that I made from materials from the pre-school. This has been a killer from every lake but two. "The Golden Killer"

Hey JF;
I have one in pre-school too. What kind of material list should I have next time I am there???? Already have my own safety scissors and glue-stick; just trying to figger out the rest

Ras-
Remember what the Boy Scouts say, "Be prepared"!!!!! I always find something of interest when I am cleaning out the area.
I made some that is a like the "The Golden Killer" but it was with dark purple. Have used it in seven lakes and not one bite!! (Maybe I need to change its name. It was called "Jezebel"!!)

Here is a fairly simple fly to tie that I have found to produce results in most lakes.

The "orange" underbelly seems to be what makes this fly irresistible.
Recipe:
#14 TMC200R, Straight eye, 3X long (or equivalent hook)
8/0 Olive Thread
Olive marabou
Fine Gold Tinsel Wire
Orange Floss Thread
Thread wrap the hook from just behind the eye back to the shank.
Tie in a 1" section of orange floss and gold tinsel wire at the shank. It helps if the tag end of each section is pointing towards the eye.
Tie in the marabou feather at the shank with the tail about equal to the length of the hook.
Take your thread wrap back to just behind the eye.
Twist the front portion of the marabou and wrap to just behind the eye and tie off with a half-hitch knot.
Pull the orange floss from back to front along the underside of the fly and tie off with a half-hitch knot.
Wrap the gold tinsel wire from back to front in about five turns and tie off with a half-hitch knot.
Complete with head wraps of thread and half-hitch knot (additional head cement is optional).
You can tie this with different colors of marabou. This fly in a White marabou version is real effective at Hosmer in the fall for Atlantic's.

Mel-
Got to try Mel!! Have not made many yellow flys except the Golden Killer. The shiny gold worked a lot. Did not make many Micky Finn types but I did catch a few. Thanks for the pic!

Gottafish,
I am curious about the tie down caddis. I have to admit that I have some in my box and have tried them but, I have never done very well with them. What conditions and environs are you using this fly with such great success. I am always looking to learn. This is definitely a fly and technique maybe that I haven't been taught or learned on my own.
Thanks in advance,
Mark

Most of the flies I tie because they are so ugly.
I tried to buy some of these from a guy in France but he would not sell any :depressed:

I've been having great luck with my "coffee grinder" seal leech. I put some black, dirty olive, red flash, and green dubbing in a coffee grinder (for fly purposes only, no coffee beans ) and mix up the dubbing. It's been real effective in still water situations in a size 8, 4x long with black or brown rabbit fur for tail.
I'll try to post a picure later.

Here it is... The coffee grinder leech - pretty gnarly looking but it catches fish. I wrap some lead on the hook to get it to the bottom.
The camera flash really brought out the red.

Sure! That's the fly with no lead added on the hook -"unleaded"
