How did they get that so realistic? Glued on rocks? Foam? Plastic? I'm intrigued! That'd be the ticket for picky trout in coastal streams...

I should pay more attention to the FOTW archives. I've been reading FAOL nearly since it's inception. I've even had a couple stories published on that site... - just havne't been as active there in the last year or so as I used to be.

I found a Kim's Cased Caddis that is similar but not quote teh same as was posted above. seen here -- http://www.flyanglersonline.com/flytying/fotw2/101005fotw.html

Then I found the pattern seen above, submitted by Ron Eagle Elk from Washington (wonder if he posts here too?) tying instructions found here:

They definately look like fish catchers. I know of one small stream where such a fly would be an absolute killer - the bottom is just COVERED with caddis clinging to the rocks. Not many mayflies on that stream. With the stones on the fly, it seems like a it's naturally weighted, so it would almost seem that one need not use splitshot to get the fly down. I'll hafta give that pattern a try when I get a new vice.

That is a beautiful bug! I bet the bows would love that!

Anybody ever thought about doing a swap of 10-12 dudes tying the same bug? I bet 20 versions of this would catch fish anywhere in Oregon? In my opinion, a heavy case caddis will work as well or better than a stone as the big heavy all day. Anybody ever put $50 up with 1/2 dozen buddies on a long week end in Maupin for a morning (no hatch anyway till 11) for a "Two Fly Combo"? I'd pick a cased caddis and a 18 green copper john. Great bug.

Yep,I purchased 1 dozen years ago at the flyfishers auction and it can be a killer in the early spring with a little water color on the Deschutes :smash:. Use a sink tip and fish it on the bottom without one of those fancy bobbers(I mean indicator). The ones I bought had sand and small pieces of bark crumbles for the body.

There's a couple of different cased caddis species. One is like the picture above as it makes it's case out of small stones/sand and the other uses sticks and mud to make their case. I've found more of the stick and mud version on the Deschutes, but they are both there. I've caught a lot of steelhead on the stick and much version. I always bought mine from Kaufmanns as I could never get them to look right even thought it's a pretty simple pattern.

Golden stone trailing a cased caddis in the fall means big trout or steelhead!

Does it make a difference? I mean in the fishing? Does a more traditional and easier to tie bug work as well? If so, then the reason to tie it is the art, not the catch.

Ah, dam.... would not want to loose that one, almost too pretty to use. I like it !
