I think I seen the same guy catch another 17+...it was a clip on BassCenter or LoudMouth bass. I picked up one of these Huddletons' at the Oregon Bass Fed Jamboree this year. Might be nice to use in California...hope to throw it at some Coastal lake largemouth too...
Sweet video!!!

Some things I noticed:
The strike was at the end of his retreave so the lure was pulled into the fish's area rather than dropped into it.
The fisherman (planned or not) increased the speed of the lure just before the strike.
The lure looks very natural.
You catch one like that in Oregon and you may be holding the state record.
The guy did an good job of filming himself.

My assumption that this was a Huddleston Swim bait do to the Video URL.
They look like this below and yes...those big ones will follow along time behind a swim bait until it notices the boat!

I did a quick Google search on Butch Brown and here is a great article on his success.
Bass anglers hooked on lures -- some are hoaxes (http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/chronicle/archive/2005/05/22/SPG2GCSM1J1.DTL)

That guy is a character, was he all by himself calling his camera "buddy"?

I hear ya, 30# test with the drag tightened down.
I'd rather have a 6# steelie with light tackle.

Well if you think catching a record sized bass isn't fun regardless of the fight, I guess you're just not a bass fisherman.

Living in Texas for a few years, I enjoyed fishing for bass with the fly rod. It was great, and they put up a good fight.
I fished a river similar to the John Day and had a great time.

<font color="red">BucketMouth is right on! I would take a fish like that EVEN if it jumped in the boat on the hookset !

First, let me just say a quick HI!
New to the warm water board with only a few posts on the main board introducing myself. My wife and I are relocating to Columbia City and you guys have no idea how much I'm looking forward to hitting the water up there. Hardcore salt and freshwater fisherman since I could hold a rod. I was lucky enough to have a dad that took my brother and I fishing every chance he could get.
With that said, this bass is just one of Butch's many oversize footballs that he catches from the afterbay at world famous Castaic Lake in So Cal. I've fished along side him on a few occasions, and he is one of the best at big fish. My biggest of 10 1/4 pounds came one morning fishing just down from him while shore fishing. Just 5 minutes after my fish, he nails a 17 pound fish that made mine look like bait. Weighs it, holds it up for a quick pic, and puts it back without any fan fare. I later got a mold and mount done of my 10 1/4, but everytime I look at it the fish reminds me of that monster Butch was holding up that morning.
Anyway, can't wait to get up to Columbia City. Our home should be finished around mid May, so looking forward to seeing you guys on the water.
Oh! Yes, I am from So Cal. I have been told by most down here that I am not going to be the most welcomed guy in town if I post where I'm coming from. Sofar, I haven't found that to be true. Nothing but kind and even P.M. invites to fish once I get up there from a few on the main board. Just let me say that I am strictly catch and release on 99% of what I catch, and do respect spots and areas of others. I will be lost when I get up there, so bare with the questions that will be coming your way. I have never caught a smallmouth, so I'm hoping that there's some decent fishery's not too far from Columbia City. Thanks everyone at ifish for making me feel welcome.

MolaJoe, welcome to the northwest. Once you start catching smallmouth bass, you may not fish for Largemouth very much. The Columbia River, Willamette, John Day, are all world class smallmouth fisheries.
B-Run Steelie, when catch and release is involved it is best to get the fish landed as soon as possible for immediate release. I'm sure Butch was using heavy line and did not want to or need to let the fish play since he wanted to release the fish ASAP.
