All right there seams to be enough interest out there for a terrestrial swap and though this is not exactly the season for fishing them it is the season for tying.
It will be a run of the mill swap with twelve tiers, twelve flies (one set for Jenni), and the deadline for flies to be sent in will be February 13th. Make sure you send a self-addressed and stamp envelope with proper protection for your flies (and the mailman) and there are tags on each of your flies w/ your moniker and pattern name. If you can't follow the guidelines, please don't join.
Also as a side note let us try to diversify the selection and not have 12 variations of the black foam ant.
Thanks

Im thinking that I will leave the sign-up open until January 11, 2006. At that time those who are in can decided what to do if all spots are not filled.
Have a good weekend

Count me in. I'm not sure what pattern yet though. Expect something crazy.
A-ight... I'm going with the highly underated Cranefly. This baby has saved many summer days and I have no idea why it isn't a bigger deal than people realize. How often do we see these in our own yards... when we were little kids, the Daddy Longlegs is one of the first bugs I remember and so far my little ones like them the best too.
When I say "saved many days"=
1/2 mile down stream of the cooler. In the hot sun with only two fish in the last three hours, one of those was on a dropper.
Many days= more than one year on more than one hand.
Everytime this comes up, I'm sitting or walking and notice that there are no rising fish- no bugs- don't like the little ones anyway... and then there's a spider web. 3-4 all wrapped up... they're obviously out. They're kinda big... nothin else is doin squat... I GOT ONE OF THOSE!
2-3 casts later... on any stream, west, east, central or coast = 14" fish and the cooler is a distant thought.

Salmon Flies ?????
Are they really Terrestrials ? I thought a Terrestrial was something other then a winged insect. Ok ants and Grasshoppers have wings sometimes But Salmon flies ?/?
The terrestrials may have aquatic relatives but none INTENTIALLY spent any of their life cycles in the water. Bees and wasps, houseflies, butterflies, caterpillars, spiders and so on are not important to the trout except for those that occasionally fall into the water. These 'land' bugs comprise less than 1% of the food consumed by the trout during a season. However, on occasion they are what the fish are after. The following is a quick look at the more common or important terrestrials you may encounter on our interior lakes.
But Heck ! If no one else has a problem I am cool with it.
Go ahead
mandinga
01-11-2006, 02:38 PM
I think you are right tony...I was thinking the foam nody would classify it as a terrestial, but it's def. not a terrestial insect.
I'll stick with a beetle, but at least one salmonfly would be cool.

" Terrestrial patterns "
Etc. lots of cool stuff I never seen before.
Spiders, Beetles and Ants oh my.

Ok sorry for the delay in this. I have been away.
This swap was loosely based on my definition of what a “terrestrial” fly was. Simply put a terrestrial would be something that is foreign to the water in witch it is consumed. I would even take it one step further as saying it is foreign to water in its natural life cycle, much like Abalone’s definition. For example the fly I chose is not an imitation of any real bug rather it resembles the extra terrestrial that it takes its name from. I have seen stimulators referred to as terrestrials because they have no specific fly they are impersonating, and since we(i) didn’t specify species of fish targeted I would even be game to such things as mice and the like.
Having said that I wouldn’t define a salmonfly as a terrestrial, and im not alone in that. I also don’t think that I would be alone in allowing grsteelies to tie that pattern for the swap since it could easily be used as a stimulator pattern in waters that don’t normally produce salmonflies. If anyone has a problem please let me know. As it stands we are still two spots short of a full swap and I would hate to exclude someone we have that is eager to tie.
Come tomorrow (enrolment closes tonight) we can decide what to do with the remaining two spots.
Thanks

All right kids the swap is full thanks to Chrome Mandinga for filling and open spot with a second terrestrial pattern to be determined. So we are set, 12 flies a piece to be sent out in the mail no later then February 13th.
NOTE: Don’t procrastinate on this swap especially for those of you who have a significant other. February 14th is valentines day and I would hate for you to be in the dog house with the misses or even worse stoned by all the ifish members in this swap for not meeting the deadline.
I will send out PM with my address in the next few days for delivery. Please clean out your mailboxes. I already know of one that is full.
If you haven’t already started get tying

Terrestrials are land living bugs. Salmon flies liver 2-3 years in the water, then crawl out and live a couple of weeks on land. Wings have nothing to do with it. Bees, house flies, craneflies, spiders, ants, beetles, etc are terrestrials. A stone fly is no more a terrestrial than a mayfly or caddisfly.

Actually, I appreciate the time you gave us. Between work and family it can be hard to get the time to sit and knock out a batch of flies. There have been a number of swaps I've had to pass on for just that reason.

I'll admit, I'm struggling. That said, I will have my flies in on time. The spider I'm tying, while very cool, is exceptionally difficult to tie. Each one takes about 30 minutes to tie. I've thrown away several that just plain didn't meet my standards.
Oh well, I'll be a better man for it in the end.

I know that things run slow up here on the mountain so I will be anxiously awaiting the arrival of the final flies.
Not satisfied with my second offering (black beetle) I went ahead a whipped up a third. Im not sure it will work but I guarantee that it is a terrestrial.
Once all flies are received they will be promptly split and sent back out.
Thanks to everyone that participated – props to those who got their flies in early.

Well, I'm the late one. I finally gave up on the spiders. I had only three that got the Mark Quality Seal of Approval and I had thrown away more than a dozen. Mark it as a lesson learned; tie the pattern several times before offering it up as a swap candidate. (Ironicly, my first tie went perfectly, and was probably the best one I've tied so far.)
Last night, after one of the best days of fishing I've had in years, I cranked out 12 little house flies, copying a pattern that I had found in my fly box. I'll drop them in the mail today after I get off of work.
My apologies to the group for being the laggard. If I can ever figure out a consistent way of tying the spider, I'll mail one to each of you.

Yea yea yea Plem it is a terrestrial. Plem got his flies hand delivered in return for a pitcher of beer and extremely cold day of fishing. I have never fished the Alien before but I hear that it is a good one when chasing warm water species.
All the flies have been delivered to a Portland area post office so it should be no time at all before your packages arrive.

LOL. That's my house fly, or at least that's what I thought it looked like. Now that you mention it, it does look more like an ant than a fly...
After the spider fiasco, I went digging for a terrestrial pattern. I had one of these in my fly box that I had purchased in a store several years ago in about a size 16 or 18. There was no way I was going to tie that thing that small and so I upsized it to a 10. Its not a hard pattern to tie.
