Deschutes report from Mike:

The 2000 run of steelhead is on!
I took my first 9 1/2 pound native on the 4th of July. The fly was a "Joe Gert".
Fish counts are about double of what they were last year. In July, look for the best action in the lower ten miles.

In August, fish from the mouth to Mack's Canyon and in. September try fishing from Mack's Canyon to Maupin. October and November fish Maupin to Warm Springs.

For the Big Idaho fish that pull into the Deschutes, fish September and October from the mouth to Beavertail.
Some fish may even stray further upstream.

The Story of the Joe Gert Fly

The Joe Gert fly was created by Mike Duley in 1996 as a joke. "Joe" Nelson (who used to camp at Gert camp ground at the Deschutes River) palmed (stole) a fly from my fly box one day and I caught him with it the next day.

Justice needed to be served! So I tied the most rediculous bad joke fly possible and gave it to him.

The first day he used it he caught 5 Deschutes summer steelhead and the rest is history.

This fly is now commercially tied by River Born Flies and sold at the Northwest Fly Fishing Outfitter in Gresham and at Buffalo Creek Outfitters in Lake Oswego.

The other guides who use it say it is the rubber legs that do the trick!
Good luck!
Mike
